Leaders to Highlight Efforts to Prevent Gun Violence in San Diego County Region
WHAT: Press Conference
WHY: Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer, in partnership with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention and others, has fought to introduce new County policies, hold gun manufacturers accountable and more to reduce gun violence in San Diego County. During the press conference, participants will highlight the actions taken to prevent gun violence and success achieved, as well as the upcoming Wear Orange Initiative (June 7-9) taking place in San Diego County and across the nation. Also, a proclamation will be presented to San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. To commemorate the annual Wear Orange weekend, which honors survivors and builds community with those working to end gun violence, the County Administration Center will be illuminated orange on Friday, June 7.

White House press secretary for Ronald Reagan who was shot in an attempt on the President’s life. He and his wife Sarah fought for stronger gun control, founded the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and in 1993 were instrumental in passing the background check bill, known as the Brady Bill. https://www.bradyunited.org/
Gabby Giffords
Former Arizona Congresswoman and outspoken advocate for gun violence prevention, Giffords was shot in 2011 and after a long recovery has gone on to form Giffords, a law center and PAC, whose mission is to “fight to end the gun lobby’s stranglehold on our political system.”

Tariq Khamisa
In 1995 Tariq Khamisa was killed by a 14-year-old gang member, Tony Hicks. Tony was tried as an adult and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Tariq’s father, Azim Khami– sa, felt this tragedy created victims on both ends of the gun. In an extraordinary act of grace and forgiveness, Azim reached out to Tony’s grandfather, Ples Felix. The two men came together in the spirit of healing to end youth violence. They formed the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) which is dedicated to teaching forgiveness, hope and peace. https://tkf.org/

Law prohibits the sale of guns and ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds starting January 2021.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Friday that would prohibit the sale of guns and ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds starting January 2021. The bill, AB 893, was co-authored by Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, and Tasha Boerner-Horvath, D-Encinitas. The bill had tremendous local support, including from Never Again CA.

LET’S END GUN VIOLENCE WITH PRIDE!
March with us on July 13.
For the fourth year in a row, SD4GVP (including Brady United, Moms Demand Action and Team ENOUGH), will march in the San Diego Pride Parade, proclaiming loudly and proudly “DISARM HATE!” Having a safer community means keeping guns out of the hands of people who, motivated by hate, or otherwise in crisis, are incited to gun violence. NOT ONE MORE. Our group of orange and red shirts will march down University Ave in Hillcrest among an estimated 200,000 people as we celebrated inclusion and a safe community.

Locations: The parade begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Ave. and Normal St., proceeds west on University Ave., turns south on 6th Ave., turns left onto Balboa Dr. and ends at Quince Dr.
