SAN DIEGO, June 1, 2026 – San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention has rebranded itself. We’re pleased to announce that SD4GVP is now the

Alliance to End Gun Violence

Over the next few months we’ll be rolling out our new name and brand. We feel that they reflect our growth over the last eight years and the direction we envision for ourselves.

We’ve evolved from a single entity educating people about gun laws to a coalition of 20 groups, and our work has expanded to include:

  • Legislation and advocacy
  • Political action and candidate designations
  • Collaboration with grass-roots groups in local neighborhoods affected by gun violence
  • Get Out the Vote campaigns (canvassing, postcards) in strategically important races
  • “Artivism” (activist art) that uses theater, video and music to help end gun violence
  • Connections with gun owners and veterans to reduce suicide by firearm

We could not have accomplished this without your ongoing support. Thank you!

Our name is changing. Here’s what isn’t changing:

  • Our steadfast commitment to end gun violence
  • Our alliance model – which only continues to grow
  • Our roots and efforts in San Diego County – where these grassroots efforts were forged
  • Our voice in the community – at events, schools, government chambers, civic groups, political candidate evaluations, in the news, and more

The backstory and our gradual rollout

A quick review of our history will help explain how we got to this point.

Fall 2017

Several members of the leadership teams of local chapters of Moms Demand Action and the Brady Campaign got together with an idea: instead of duplicating gun violence prevention efforts among different groups, why not unite our efforts as an alliance? Recognizing the amplified power of this alliance, this group laid the groundwork for a new organization, San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, or SD4GVP.

February 27, 2018

SD4GVP launched with a public event and a commitment to one very simple and powerful mission: End Gun Violence.

2018–2025

The SD4GVP alliance grew to include a dozen and a half organizations, scores of active volunteers, and an email list of over 1500 community members committed to creating a community safe from gun violence. Our alliance collaborates with school districts, government agencies, and a host of like-minded local, state, and federal elected officials who have proven to be strong allies, authoring and supporting legislation and programs that have proven effective in reducing gun violence.

Summer 2025

The SD4GVP leadership team met to take stock of the organization’s success and growth since its founding. SD4GVP has been instrumental in helping pass landmark legislation, educating the public about the epidemic of gun violence and how to improve safety, and assisting in under-served communities to help mitigate the causes of gun violence. What started as a regional organization has become a statewide voice for change and an influential supporter of local, state, and federal political candidates who advocate for gun violence prevention.

The consensus from this discussion was that SD4GVP’s name no longer reflected the scope and influence of the organization’s efforts. It was time to graduate to a new name that better reflects our composition and impact.

Recognizing the power of the Alliance

The SD4GVP model proved that an alliance can be extremely effective in bringing about positive change. Why not honor that by including the word “Alliance” in our name?

Complementing that was the power of our very simple and obvious mission: “End Gun Violence,”

Putting it all together, a new name all but suggested itself.

The new name honors our history and sets us up for the future as we continue to expand our efforts to end gun violence. The stylized “A” in our new logo calls attention to both the Alliance and to taking Action. Orange, the recognized color for gun violence prevention, supports this call to action, while blue balances that with our calm, well-reasoned efforts.

In the coming weeks, you’ll start to see this new Alliance brand roll out in several different forms:

  • Our website
  • Our social media presence on Instagram, Threads and Facebook
  • Our email communications
  • A new collection of branded merchandise, including orange and blue versions of apparel that you can wear to events (the proceeds support our continuing work)
  • And, in a big, new step for our organization, a billboard on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard throughout June, Gun Violence Awareness Month

The organization you are part of is still the same organization – now with a name that better reflects the very concept that inspired our formation in the first place.

Honoring YOU

Without your continued support, we could not have grown to the point of advancing this name change. The very definition of an alliance is people meaningfully coming together for a common cause. Our renaming and new branding pay tribute to your lasting support for safe communities.

Moving forward together

As a dependable supporter, you may have questions about our name change and the direction of the organization. We’re here to answer any questions you have – and to continue the work we’re doing together as an alliance. Please reach out to us at any time. As always, we value your input as we continue this work to end gun violence.

Thanks for all you do.

Common questions

What is the new name and brand of San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention?

As of June 2026, San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention has changed its name and brand to Alliance to End Gun Violence.

How long has the Alliance to End Gun Violence been working in gun-violence prevention in San Diego?

Under its previous name (San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention), the Alliance to End Gun Violence has worked with San Diego’s elected officials, community groups, faith-based organizations and conscientious citizens since 2018. We were a sponsor of the City of San Diego’s Safe Storage Ordinance (approved in 2019) and we have advocated for secure storage laws throughout the County and state since that time. Members of the Alliance board appear frequently in the press (TV, radio, print) to raise awareness about legislation, advocacy, political action, electoral candidates, red flag laws, artivism, and the daily violence that afflicts neighborhoods in and around San Diego.

How can concerned citizens in San Diego get involved with the Alliance to End Gun Violence?
